Rebellious Forms

2022–2023

Solo exhibition, interactive sculptural installation
Stavanger Art Museum, Norway, 19 November 2022 – 7 May 2023

Rebellious Forms is an interactive sculptural installation developed as an expansion of Participatory Playground. Presented in NONA, an exhibition space within Stavanger Art Museum, the work invites visitors of all ages to touch, move, wear and rearrange its elements, continuously changing the installation through use.

The installation brings together sculptures of different sizes, weights and materials. Soft wearable structures can be joined with Velcro and attached to the walls, while large foam panels in shades of pink and red can be lifted, stacked and supported by wooden blocks and poles. Some elements suggest building, others dressing up or creating new compositions. Their forms and arrangements remain open to the imagination of participants.

With no fixed instructions or prescribed outcomes, visitors decide how to use the sculptures, whether to build together, experiment individually or invent their own games. Play becomes a way to exercise choice, negotiate with others and take initiative within the museum. The installation opens questions about who is allowed to touch, change and shape an artwork, and who gets to determine the rules of engagement.

The exhibition included Here for You, a performance staged in the public spaces around Arneageren Square and Sølvberget Library and Culture House. The performance was developed into a two-channel video installation, presented at both Stavanger Art Museum and Sølvberget Library and Culture House.
